This result is sometimes termed Amontons' second law of friction after Guillaume Amontons but is also sometimes termed Euler's law of friction after Leonhard Euler.

Statement

Amonton's second law of friction states that the magnitude of the friction force experienced between two dry solid bodies through a surface of contact is proportional to the magnitude of the normal force between them.
